MALVERN, Pa., Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Introducing the Zero® Filter Capsule
Saint-Gobain Bioprocess Solutions, a global leader in single-use fluid management systems, today announced the commercial launch of its novel Zero® Filter Capsule line. Advancing Saint-Gobain's focus on driving system-level process efficiency across its filtration portfolio, the Zero® filter introduces a patented architecture that virtually eliminates unrecoverable fluid volume, setting a new benchmark for yield and operational economics in high-value biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The initial commercial rollout includes 1.5-inch and 2.5-inch mid-size capsule formats, ideally sized for process development, pilot scale, and final fill-finish operations. Additional formats designed to support larger-scale bioprocessing applications are planned as part of the ongoing expansion of the Zero® product line.
Active Aseptic Recovery: Moving Beyond Conventional Filter
Traditional capsule filters inherently retain significant quantities of valuable fluid within internal dead spaces and core voids. While manufacturers often work to reduce holdup volume elsewhere in the process, unrecoverable product trapped within the filter remains a persistent challenge that is often accepted as part of the filtration process. Because retained volume generally increases with filter size, the impact on process yield can become even more significant in larger-scale applications. In comparative bench testing against standard commercial capsules, which routinely lose up to 150 mL of product per 2.5" capsule per run, Zero® reduced unrecoverable volume to near zero, while also enabling recovery of product that would otherwise be left behind downstream of the filter.
This recovery performance is enabled by a patented aseptic recovery port integrated directly into the filter architecture. Upon filtration process completion, sterile gas is directed into the filter core to actively displace and recover product that would otherwise remain trapped downstream of the membrane, helping maximize recovery without compromising sterility or product integrity.
"Every milliliter of drug product retained in a filter is product that never reaches a patient," said Hannah Hertrick, Market Development Manager of Filtration Products at Saint-Gobain Bioprocess Solutions. "For manufacturers producing high-value biologics, holdup volume often represents a hidden cost that has traditionally been accepted as part of the process. With Zero®, we're giving manufacturers a practical way to recover product that would otherwise be left behind, helping improve yield, reduce waste, and maximize the value of every batch."
A Broader Vision for Filtration
The launch of Zero® builds on Saint-Gobain Bioprocess Solutions' broader filtration strategy, which views filtration not simply as a standalone unit operation, but as an opportunity to improve the overall process. From high-performance vent filtration that can reduce footprint and simplify system integration to low-holdup liquid filtration designed to improve product recovery, Saint-Gobain is developing solutions that address efficiency both around the process and within it. This approach reflects the company's commitment to helping manufacturers improve productivity today while advancing sustainability objectives and preparing for the future of bioprocessing.
Availability
The 1.5" and 2.5" Zero® Filter Capsules are available globally for immediate sampling, process validation, and commercial order. Additional formats designed to support larger-scale bioprocessing applications are planned.
