Rothman Orthopaedics Issues Statement Regarding Highmark Network Status

PR Newswire

Effective October 1, 2026, Rothman Orthopaedics will be out of network with Highmark Blue Shield and Federal Employee Program (FEP) plans for care provided in Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 11, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Effective October 1, 2026, Rothman Orthopaedics will be out of network with Highmark Blue Shield and Federal Employee Program (FEP) plans for care provided in Pennsylvania. While this is not the outcome Rothman had hoped for, the practice remains committed to supporting affected patients and continuing discussions with Highmark.

Our focus is, and will continue to be, our patients.

This change does not impact appointments in New Jersey, where Rothman will remain in network. All other Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans will also remain in network, including IBX and Horizon.

"Our focus is, and will continue to be, our patients," said Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, PhD, MBA, President of Rothman Orthopaedics and Richard H. Rothman Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at Thomas Jefferson University. "We want patients to have access to the physicians and care they know and trust, and we remain committed to finding a path forward with Highmark."

Rothman will continue to accept out-of-network benefits where available. Patients with Highmark Blue Shield or FEP plans are encouraged to contact their plan directly to confirm their coverage, out-of-network benefits and potential cost-sharing.

Rothman also wishes to clarify a recent statement by Highmark regarding the federal Independent Dispute Resolution (IDR) process. A company referenced by Highmark in connection with that process is a separate entity and is not affiliated with Rothman Orthopaedics in any way. Rothman does not control that entity or has it benefited from its activities.

Rothman Orthopaedics remains committed to providing high-quality, specialized orthopedic care, preserving patient choice and access, and continuing to deliver the clinical expertise, innovation and value patients throughout the Philadelphia region have relied on for decades. Rothman will continue working toward a resolution with Highmark that restores in-network access for its members.
